Thread pitch gauges are used to measure the pitch of the screw thread which is also known as measuring the lead of a screw. There are 3 separte type of threading gauges and they are the ISO metric pitch gauge, gauge used to measure ACME thread form and the third one is used to measure Whitworth screws. This tool can be used to find out the thread pitch of any kind of screw and all you need to do is to match the thread with the corresponding leaf’s ridged edge. American Unified threads or UNC, UNF and metric threads are distinctive with two dimensions namely the size of the thread and the thread pitch.

The tool is not considered as a precision instrument for measuring the thread pitch but only as a reference instrument. The gauge actually allows the user to decide the profile of any given thread and expressly categorize it by its shape and pitch. Precious time is saved by the use of thread pitch gauges as it averts the requirement to measure and calculate the thread pitch in a threaded item. How a thread pitch is measured? The measurement of a thread pitch is in millimeter and it is the distance between two threads. The measurement is taken along the fastner length and for example, if thread pitch is measured as 1.5, then it should be read as 1.5mm which is the distance between two threads.

Thread pitch in smaller fasteners are found to be smaller because they have fine threads. Thread pitch gauges are available in the market in huge number and variety as there is a huge demand posed by the threading industry. Threading operations require quality thread pitch gauge and a feeler gauge is an important instrument which is used to measure the width of a gap. Engineering industry use the gauge extensively to find out the clearance between the two parts. Small pieces of steel lengths in considerable numbers makeup the feeler gauge and these pieces represent different thicknesses bearing marks of measurements. The industry also uses a number of gauges such as thread plug gauge, slip gauge, thread ring gauge, thred gauge and each has their unique functions and utility.

Summary

This article is about thread pitch gauge and its definition. The article elaborates on the gauge formation and its functions and also talks about the various thread pitch gauges available for the threading industry for different uses.
