Here’s How You Can Make Compost for Your Garden
Posted: Dec 15, 2017
Composting is a great way to productively use the leftover food that was just about to get wasted at your home. You can keep a container such as a tin bucket in your kitchen to collect the composting materials and then add them to the heap that will ultimately turn into compost. The things that can be accumulated in the bin include vegetable & fruit scraps, coffee grounds and egg shells.
Other household or garden waste that can be put in the compost can be grass and plant clippings, shredded newspaper, finely chopped wood, dried leaves and straw.
Also be aware of the materials that should not be put in a bin for composting. These are:
- Any food product containing oil, grease or meat
- Dairy products
- Plant materials affected by any disease
- Sawdust from pressure-treated wood
- Animal feces
You may consult your Calgary dump removal company to get a better idea of the materials that can and cannot be composted.
Steps to create the compost
- Mix green and brown materials – For making a hot-compost heap in corner of your garden, wait till you collect enough materials piling down at least 3 feet deep. You will have to mix your wet + green products with the brown + dry products. Start preparing the organic compost pile by alternating layers of brown and green products. If the pile begins to look very wet and is smelly add more of brown materials. If it becomes too brown and dry, add the green products to make it moist.
- Add some water to pile – Keep sprinkling some water on the compost pile regularly to give it a consistency of damp sponge. If you add excess water the microorganisms developing in your pile can get waterlogged and the heap will begin to simply rot instead of turning into compost. You can also check the temperature of your pile to ensure that the items are getting properly decomposed. Alternatively, just dig into the middle of pile with your hand – it should feel slightly warm.
- Mix up your pile – It is good to provide some oxygen to the pile by shuffling it in and out once in a week using a garden fork. The right time to mix up the pile is when its center begins to feel warm – with temperature of 130 -150 F. By stirring up the heap regularly you will be able to prepare it faster and prevent the material from developing a foul smell.
- Nourish the garden – When the compost pile no longer exudes heat and turns dry, brown and crumbly, it is ready to be used in your garden. You can add around four to six inches of this manure to the plants in garden bed and pots as the planting season begins.
