Frequently Asked Question About USDOT Registration
Posted: Dec 21, 2017
The United States Department of Transportation requires every interstate commercial vehicle operator to register for a USDOT number. The number serves as a means of identification for commercial operators and carriers.
The registration is mandatory for three different types of commercial transportation or carriers. They are the transportation of people between two American states, transportation of cargo between two American states and transportation of hazardous substances that require a permit.
This post provides the answers to FAQs about USDOT registration and how to get USDOT number.
How Do I Register for USDOT?
Since December 12, 2015, the department of registration put a stop to paper registration for USDOT. However, the department allows USDOT updates for already existing numbers to be done through paper means.
Therefore, to commence the registration process, you must go through the Unified Registration System. Though there is no initial cost until the URS is fully implemented, you would be required to pay $300 for operational authorities.
How Do I Reactivate My USDOT Number?
Before you commence the reactivation process, you need to ascertain the status of your USDOT number. You can do by logging into the online registration portal already provided above with details of your USDOT pin.
Once you have ascertained that you actually require a reactivation, you need to complete the MCS-150 form. Online submission of the form would be allowed in two cases:
- If the reactivation was occasioned by deactivation for reason of lack of biennial update.
- If your reactivation was occasioned by a new entrant revocation.
What Is an MC Number and Who Needs It?
The MC number is also referred to as operation authority number and required in addition to a DOT number for the following class of people:
- Carriers operating as for-hire services.
- Carriers arranging for transport or transporting passengers in interstate commerce.
- Carriers transporting federally regulated commodities or arranging for their transport in interstate commerce.
Depending on the type of authority granted, the MC number is also known as "FF" or "MX." Also, unlike the USDOT number, there might need to obtain various operating authorities for its proposed business operations. The operating authority prescribes the mode of operation that can be carried out by a business.
How Do You Change the Address for the Motor Carrier Operating Authority?
The address change request can be submitted in three major ways which are:
- It can be submitted online by clicking on the licensing and insurance system to follow the process
- You can submit it by email by signing the MCSA-5889 Motor Carrier Records Change Form and uploading it through the web form.
- You could also send it by direct mail to the address of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
- Finally, you could fax your request to 202-366-3477. However, it is important to note that you shouldn’t fax more than once as this could lead to delay in the entire process.
The completed form must contain the company name, contact information, and signature of the applicant or representative.
