The world of photography, lighting, fluorescence microscopy, spectroscopy, clinical chemistry etc. is largely dependent upon optical filters for enhanced and effective performance. Over the past few decades, the nature and scope of these simple yet impactful products have improved by leaps with a number of different types available in the market today each of which have more specified and more refined functions to maximize their suitability with the devices / applications to which they are applied.

Here is a brief roundup of the different types of filters that are mass manufactured by companies to meet with ever rising demand for the same…

  • Monochromatic optical filters – These filters basically work to transmit a narrow band of wavelengths that are mechanically selectable from a broader range of wavelengths (colors) in the input. These filters are used mostly in optical measuring instruments where tunable monochromatic light is wanted. Fluorometers and spectrometers can be mentioned in this respect.
  • Dichroic filters – These are also known as thin film filters and are used to reflect away unwanted portions of light and transmit the rest. Using the principle of interference, these filters can be used in devices like dichroic prisms of cameras as well as in many scientific tools.
  • Infrared and ultraviolet filters – The infrared optical filters can be used to block or allow infra red wavelengths to pass. UV filters on the other hand work specifically to stop UV wavelengths from passing.

Besides the mentioned, there is a range of other varieties of optical filters like natural density filters, bandpass, shortpass, longpass filters, metal mesh, polarizer and more that are manufactured by some of the most renowned named in this industry.
