HISTORY

To say about the greatness of the paintings, these paintings came into existence from the 1600 A.D. The painters from the Vijayanagar Empire were scattered to different places after the defeat of the Vijayanagar Empire. Many moved to Thanjavur and worked under the patronage of the Nayakas. Those Nayakas were more passionate towards the paintings and so the painters got a good respect from the Nayakas Empire. After the defeat of the Nayakas by the Marathas the painters got more importance as the Marathas were more interested towards the paintings. Many drawings were asked to be drawn on the temples, walls and even on the palaces.

TECHNIQUES AND STYLES

The painters during that period followed one of the techniques, which are known as the reverse glass technique where the paintings were drawn on the backside of the glass which makes the paintings look glitter. This is one of the cheapest and easiest ways of painting. The painters used the original colours like the vegetables and the mineral dyes to paint the drawings. They used blue colour for Lord Vishnu, green colour for Goddess Sivakami and white colour for the Lord Natarajan. Most of the painting’s background is coloured using the red colour. Nowadays, the people use only the chemical paints to make the drawings look colourful. They use different colours and stones to make the God look colourful.

MAKINGS

The Thanjavur paintings are made by drawing the initial stage of sketching on the white cloth and the chalk powder is coated over the initial sketching. Then the main painting is done and the decorations are made by pasting the coloured stones. As the final touch to the Thanjavur painting, the gold foils are used to make the paintings great and colourful.
