Painting your own home can save you a heap of cash. The materials are not cheap, but that is your only outlay. When you hire a professional painter and decorator seventy five percent of the cost will be for his labor. The other twenty five per cent is for plant and materials. So if you don't mind getting a little paint on your hands, lets get started.

Best Way To Paint Walls.

Using a roller and emulsion brush. A extension pole is a must but you can use a broom handle. You will need a paint tray or scuttle. Before you start place dust sheets over furniture and floors. Pour a little emulsion into paint tray and with your extension pole fixed to the roller head, role in tray to charge-up roller. Then simply roll the paint onto the wall, not too thickly, leave no roller marks, keep rolling till wall is covered. When you have finished rolling the wall, pour a little emulsion paint into a tin and with a 2 inch brush cut-in the edges. When dry apply second coat.

Best Way To Paint A Ceiling.

Painting the ceiling is carried out much the same as the walls, and this is were the extension pole really comes in handy. Be careful when rolling around light fittings. Some times it is hard to see which area you have rolled, and you can have misses where you have not rolled, the ceiling will then appear patchy. If the light is bad work away from the window or light source, and you will see the section you have just painted.

Best Way To Paint Doors.

Painting a flush-door with no molding Wash down with sugar soap. When dry rubdown to remove grit and any paint runs. Apply the undercoat with a small sponge roller and lay off paint in a downwards direction. When dry gently rubdown with very fine glass paper. Apply the gloss coat with the sponge roller. Cover all the door. Apply thinly. Roll out the paint well. To finish Roll down the door from the top and from left to right. This will leave what is known as a jet finish with no brush marks.

Best Way To Paint Skirting Boards.

Skirting board are the last piece of woodwork in a room to be painted. It's not my favorite decorating job due to the sore knees. But that is the best way to paint skirting on your hands and knees as you can guide the paint brush along without damaging the floor covering. Some painters mask up at the base of the skirting where carpets are laid. A well worn cutting in brush is best for skirting painting. Avoid picking up grit from the floor and transferring it to the gloss paint.

Best Way To Paint Radiators.

Radiators can be painted to match the wall color or painted in there original color white. Wash the radiator down with sugar soap to remove dirt and grease. Give a good rubdown to remove any paint runs. I use a 2 inch brush and a small Fitch to paint radiators. After dusting the radiator down i paint the top and then the bottom. When finished I paint the middle section. This prevents any danger of runs. Then I use the Fitch to paint as far as possible around the back of the radiator. Most radiators need 1 undercoat followed by a gloss coat. Some say it's best to have the radiator turned on hot, but I do not find that helpful.
