Phulkari which means "flower work" is an ancient art of Punjab.There are different types of phulkari dupatta which can be categorized based on the embroidery like Bagh, Thirma, Darshan Dwar, Sainchi Phulkari, Chope, Surajmukhi, Meenakari, Satranga etc. During ancient times, these dupattas were handmade by ladies in Punjab and was not made for the commercial purpose. It was made in vibrant and attractive colors and was worn during weddings and other festive occasions. It has its origin in the famous love story of Heer and Ranjha.Traditionally Phulkari dupattas were worn during wedding season by ladies. Bridal phulkari dupatta was generally made in bright colors like orange, green and red. White color phulkari was made for widows and elderly women.

Generally, silk thread is used in these dupattas. The embroidery done in a phulkari dupatta is one of the most detailed and finest art and needs proper care. It is advisable to hand wash or even dry clean it occasionally to retain the brightness of fabric.

Phulkari is a major pick of the famous Indian fashion designers for their show stoppers. It was latest worn by Aishwarya Rai in the movie "Sarabjit". Even people abroad are using these dupattas to drape with other Indian traditional dresses to wear on ceremonies and special occasions. It has become very popular among them and their usage has given a great pride to Indian heritage and tradition.
