IPhone 2018 & iPhone 2018 Plus Will Both Have OLED Display

Ming-Chi Kuo says we should expect TWO OLED flagships in 2018

Next year, Apple will introduce TWO new handsets with OLED displays, according to none other than KGI Securities analyst and prominent Apple soothsayer Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple’s 2018 iPhone XL To Pack 6.5in OLED Display

LG, not Samsung, will apparently supply display units for Apple’s iPhone XL in 2018

Apple will release the biggest iPhone it has ever produced in 2018. Called the iPhone XL, the handset will feature a 6.5in display that Apple will source from LG.

The iPhone XL will be joined by two smaller iPhone handsets, though all three models will share the same design language as the current iPhone X model.

These means, most likely, that ALL iPhones in 2018/19 will use OLED panels unless Apple plans to use LCD displays on the entry-level iPhone X in 2018 which isn’t likely given how the iPhone X range is basically all about OLED displays.

LG will provide OLED panels for the iPhone XL with Samsung taking care of the two smaller iPhone models. This split will apparently net LG an estimated $2 billion in revenue for 2018 alone.

The only potential here is that LG’s OLED is not quite as good as Samsung’s and this disparity is more obvious on larger displays. The Pixel 2 XL uses LG OLED and its display is no way near as good as the Samsung Galaxy S8’s. Perhaps LG will up its game in 2018?

The recently launched iPhone X - the 10th-anniversary model - is Apple's first handset to ditch the iconic Retina IPS LCD in favour of a Samsung made OLED panel, a move which is bringing quite a lot of praise in Apple's direction if the initial wave of reviews is any measure. There's a TON of approval for the iPhone X and a big chunk of it is being aimed squarely at the enhanced display.

In a note to investors, Kuo said that he believes Apple will release two OLED based OnePlus 5 repair parts in 2018, one of which will likely be an iPhone X successor model. The other is open to debate, but he thinks it could be a "Plus" version with a larger display and body size.

And this type of move would make sense. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus now feel very tired; retiring them in 2018 in favour of two OLED iPhone X handsets makes more sense, especially if Apple can get every on board with paying $1000 for an iPhone.

I personally cannot wait for this to happen. I was grossly unimpressed by the iPhone 8 when I tested it; nothing felt new, nothing left me excited. The handset is now cooked, after four years, so, yes, it is definitely time to move on.

And the iPhone X is a great basis on which to build on. It looks and feels fantastic in the hand, way better than it does in pictures, and while the pricing is high, Apple users don’t seem to mind, so Apple can hardly be blamed for sticking to its guns in this context.

This means, from late-2018, Apple will be selling two $1000+ handsets instead of one. And that, dear readers, is what you call an excellent profit-making enterprise. It also means Apple’s 2014 iPhone design will finally be DEAD, along with traditional TouchID.

Second-generation handsets are always better too; there are always issues with the first time anyone tries a completely new design out. That means the iPhone XI – or, whatever it is eventually called – will likely be a better, more reliable handset than the current OnePlus 5 LCD screen replacement, just as the iPhone 6s was to the iPhone 6.

Taking this forward, what we might be looking at is essentially a return to Apple's former standard play - the iPhone X launch as part of a trio alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus being a unique one-off.

That would mean in 2018 we'd see just two iPhones launched in September. The remaining question is; what will they be called? Are we going full Roman numerals? Will it be the iPhone XI and iPhone XI Plus?

Kuo also said he expects Apple to divide the iPhone's steel surround into more parts - currenly for the iPhone X it is made from four components; he believes this could improve the design overall, but also enhance data transmission. He says both OLED models will feature front-facing TrueDepth cameras and Face ID, but he does not think Apple will add the same tech to the rear shooter of either. Other than this he said there will be a spec upgrade but has not gone into more detail just yet.
