: We know Catalytic Converters converts harmful emissions into less harmful ones, but, do you know how all it is done? Nope, then let’s get down to it.

The slithering war of harmful emissions from cars has been raging for many years. Smog like last time, this time again, has choked the streets of many Indian cities. But, irrespective of the number of times the government has announced public health emergencies, the evening news headlines declaring the index of smog rising or the reports sing-songing the health complications these emissions can cause, we the general public of India wear blinders that keep us unaware of these dangerous environment conditions and what they can do to our health.

To keep up with the laws constituted by the government of India regarding the amount of pollution the cars can generate, automobile companies are working towards the refinement of vehicle’s engine and fuel system to curb the proportion of harmful toxics the engines emit into the air, by installing Catalytic Converters into vehicle’s exhaust system.

But, How Catalytic Converters Work?

Before the creation of catalytic converters, since there isn’t any device to control the oxidation of these carbon fuels, the impure, toxic and health-harming waste gases generated by an internal combustion engine flush straight down the exhaust tailpipe and exhausted into the atmosphere.

Now, the modern cars and automobiles are equipped with Catalytic Converters, which are located in a vehicle’s exhaust system near the engine manifold, the point where the engine meets the exhaust system, but gladly, it doesn’t work like a normal filter. The catalyst, a chemical in Catalytic Converters alters the composition of these the waste gases by splitting up the molecules which contain harmless atoms before they are released into the atmosphere.

  1. Pollution gases are made of harmful molecules, which are pumped from the vehicle’s combustion engine past the honeycomb catalyst which is made of platinum, palladium, or rhodium.
  2. These molecules are made of harmless atoms. The Catalytic Converter splits up these molecules into their respective harmless atoms.
  3. These atoms are again stitched back together into their molecules of comparatively less harmful substances.
