Magnetic separation is an industrial process where ferrous contents are removed from the materials on a production line. Magnetic Separators are used to extract useful metals, separate recycling material, purify the material being processed and to perform a wide variety of other tasks. Widely used in the mineral, recycling, environmental engineering, food, biomedical and chemical industry, Magnetic Separators are extremely simple, convenient and effective tools to separate ferromagnetic content and electrically conductive materials of different sizes.

Types Of Magnetic Separators

The basic types of magnetic separators are listed below:

  • Over band magnetic separator
  • Roll Magnetic Separator
  • Drum Magnetic Separator

In addition to this, other type of Magnetic Separators include:

  • Eddy Current Separator,
  • Electromagnetic Separators.

Over Band Magnetic Separator: In an Over Band Magnetic Separator, a Magnetic Overbelt or Overband is placed either crosswise or lengthwise above the conveyor at a fixed working distance. When the materials flow through the conveyor belt, ferrous objects are captured by the magnetic overhead belt. This helps a manufacturing unit reach unprecedented level of sorting purity and efficiency.

Roll Magnetic Separator: Roll Magnetic Separators are used for separating or concentrating minerals or materials of low magnetic susceptibility. These are mostly used in extraction of iron or chromium bearing minerals from silica sand. Roll Magnetic Separators consist of two rolls, one of which is magnetic. There is a belt between them that carries the ore into magnetic field. The movement of belt here is controlled by a motor fixed to one end of the roll. The rotational speed of rolls can be adjusted according to the material properties.

Drum Magnetic Separator: In a Drum Magnetic Separator, the Drum shell made from non-magnetic stainless steel revolves around a magnetic field. As the material which is fed evenly from the chute falls over the drum, a powerful magnetic field attracts and holds the ferrous particles.

Eddy Current Separator: Eddy Current Separator uses a powerful magnetic field to separate non-ferrous metals from waste. The device makes use of eddy current to effect the separation. The eddy current separator is applied to a conveyor belt carrying a thin layer of mixed waste. At the end of the conveyor belt there is an eddy current rotor. Non-ferrous metals are thrown forward from the belt, while ferrous materials are separated from the material through the electromagnets.

Electromagnetic Separator: Electromagnetic Separators consist of a strong Electromagnet that controls the strength of magnetic force. These machines are classified into Auto Cleaning Type and Manual Cleaning Type according to a scrap belt for transfer and discharge of pure material.
