How Is Diwali Celebrated In Different Countries

Diwali, the festival of lights and gift exchange, is certainly one of the most popular festivals in India. However, with it has also risen in prominence in a wide range of other countries. This is especially the case in countries that have a significant Hindu population. As more and more people emigrate from India, the celebration of Diwali is going to increase in other countries.

In most countries, Diwali is celebrated on a similar note as in India. However, variations do exist. Here are a few countries where Diwali has become an important festival.

Australia

Diwali is a popular public festival in the Australian cities of Melbourne and Brisbane. It is not only celebrated by people of Indian origin but also among the local populace. Starting in 2006, Diwali is celebrated at Federation Square in Melbourne with great pomp and splendour. In fact, the festivities have been included in the Melbourne Arts calendar. This event is celebrated over a week. It is accompanied by traditional dances and live music. Fireworks also take place.

Indonesia

Indonesia is home to a sizeable Hindu group, especially in Bali. There, people do celebrate the victory of good over evil. However, the celebrations are known as Galungan instead of Diwali. The ritual grammar and the dates have also been derived from Balinese culture. The Indian Tamil descendants, elsewhere in Indonesia, do observe Diwali however.

Trinidad and Tobago

In Trinidad and Tobago, all communities come together to celebrate Diwali. One of the most important of these celebrations is Diwali Nagar which takes place in Chaguanas, Trinidad. During this event, stage performances take place such as plays and skits. Lakshmi Puja is also held and event comes to an end with fireworks.

Nepal

In Nepal, the festivities surrounding Diwali is called Swanti or Tihar. While it is also celebrated over 5 days like Diwali, the actual festivities tend to differ. In the first day, called Kaag Tihar, offerings are presented to crows. These creatures are considered to be messengers of the divine. The second day is Kukur Tihar. During this day, dogs are presented with offerings to honour their honesty. The third day is known as Goru Tihar and it is dedicated to cows and oxen.

The third day is also reserved for Lakshmi Puja. The celebrations of the fourth day tend to vary among regions and cultures. Some celebrate Govardhan Puja while others celebrate Goru Tihar. The final day is known as Bhai Tika and it is similar to Bhai Duj in India. This day, sisters and brothers celebrate the bond they share with gifts and food.

UK and US

Both of these countries have a large Hindu population. Therefore, Diwali celebrations have become common. In the United Kingdom, Leicester is the spot for some of the biggest celebrations of Diwali outside India. The Prime Minister of Britain also celebrates Diwali at his official residence, 10 Downing Street. In the US, Diwali is officially recognised as a cultural festival. It is also celebrated in the White House.

Diwali is a popular festival in various other countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, and Ireland. Even African nations like South Africa and Kenya celebrate this festival.
