Travelling may not be avoided and can be hectic. For some familiesthat would like to include loved ones with Alzheimer’s or other memory disorders, early preparations can be helpful.

Here are some tips to make travelingeasier:

  • Suitable time of the day-Traveling comes with the hustle and bustle that overwhelms everyone, and especially those with a memory disorder. Figure out the time of the day when your loved one is at their worst or best, and plan your travel around such times. For example, sun downingis a time of day that may negatively affect those suffering from Alzheimer’s, if so, try to schedule your travel before evening.
  • Organize some activities-A change in environment coupled with sitting for long times might result in increased agitation and stress for those with Alzheimer’s. To help, organize some meaningful activities such as flipping through the family photo albums or looking at magazines or a book. These activities will help keep them busy during those airport delays or long drives.
  • GPS Tracking-Many families who take care of someone with Alzheimer’s
, usually have one major fear: wandering. A change in the environment might increase agitation, causing them to wander around. If your loved one disappears in that busy airport or park, it can be very stressful for everyone. With recent technological developments you can use pendants, shoes or watches with GPS capabilities that can help you to keep track of someoneat all times, eliminating those fears.

  • Contact cards-In the event that you get separated from your loved one with a memory disorder while traveling, it needsto be easy for people to contact you. Use of emergency contact cards can help. Make sure the card has your name and contact information as well as contact details for two other reliable friends or members of the family. Place these cards in their purse, wallet, shirt pocket, around their neck or in their travel bag.
  • Respite care – If traveling isn’t going to be an option for your loved one, finding a temporary arrangement is a good option. Respite care can offer comfort and peace of mind knowing that your loved one is spending time with other caring individuals. It allows your loved one to interact with others having similar experiences while being in a safe, supportive environment.

For some seniors with Alzheimer’s, travelling isn’t something to look forward to. However, with a bit of creativity, everyone can enjoytaking that next trip.
