All public access to an airport is channeled through the terminal, where every person must walk through a metal detector and all items must go through an X-ray machine.

Almost all airport metal detectors are based on pulse induction (PI). Typical PI systems use a coil of wire on one side of the arch as the transmitter and receiver. This technology sends powerful, short bursts (pulses) of current through the coil of wire. Each pulse generates a brief magnetic field. When the pulse ends, the magnetic field reverses polarity and collapses very suddenly, resulting in a sharp electrical spike. This spike lasts a few microseconds (millionths of a second) and causes another current to run through the coil. This subsequent current is called the reflected pulse and lasts only about 30 microseconds. Another pulse is then sent and the process repeats. A typical PI-based Walkthrough metal detector sends about 100 pulses per second, but the number can vary greatly based on the manufacturer.

Walk-through Metal Detectors are normally associated with the security searches we encounter at airports.

They detect metallic objects on people passing through the detector.

Its LCD display function can let the users recognize the type of metal objects easily. With your metal detector, you can hunt for coins, relics, jewelry, gold, and silver just about anywhere. The detector is versatile and easy to use.

They are available with different numbers of detection zones, i.e. 1, 2, 6, 12, 18 and 33 zones, the greater number of detection’s zones the more accurate the location of metallic object on the person can be determined, saving operator time.

In an airport application with a high throughput of passengers, it is extremely important that the detector can process passengers quickly whilst providing an accurate location of metallic items on a person. 18 or 33 zone detectors are normally deployed in this type of application and other locations where high throughput of people is required.

The level of detection sensitivity can be adjusted to meet varying threats.

Westminster recommends that a WG Walk through Metal Detector Test Kit be purchased to regularly check that the detector is set up and functioning correctly.
