Are you a workplace superhero, and do you consider other superheroes rivals for the spotlight and accolades? If that’s where you are, think about this—other superheroes could be your allies, not your enemies or competitors. Superheroes know who their allies are and although they may not always agree and may even have a good fight every now and then, the relationship endures. There’s a lot to be said about working together to save the world.

Too often, in the workplace, workers are pitted against each other in the competition for reviews, status, praise and rewards when recognition turns into competition. But like the characters in the superhero franchises, every superhero has strength and powers of their own and when they are working together, they can help save the world. That brings us to the concept of teamwork—an often trumpeted measure of success in the workplace.

Can superheroes work as a team?

Sure. The first thing is that the folks on the team need to know and understand the end game. What are you trying to accomplish? If the goal is to save the world, then efforts must be pointed in that direction and communicated. Of course, there will be differing views, but the strength of the team is found in being able to bring together the differing views to meet the goal. Individuals may see the situation from their own angle, but they realize that solutions cannot be affected in a vacuum.

Superheroes understand the importance of collaboration. Are you familiar with the Pixar film, "The Incredibles," a family of superheroes—each with their own strength? The father starts out on his own, only to discover that it will take a family effort to rescue the world. Marvel’s "Avengers" come together and learn to fight as a team to save humanity. You get the picture. Even superheroes with individual strengths need to collaborate and respect the contributions of others.

Of course, there is bound to be conflict among superheroes—whether it is a struggle for leadership or when some feel their voice is not being heard. These struggles can undermine the team’s effort and delay solutions, thereby diminishing superhero effectiveness. Recognize that every superhero is part of the team and respect everyone’s contribution.
