Four Methods of Waste Disposal

The countries with well developed economies are grappling today with the concern of speedy and safe disposal of waste. There are non-biodegradable wastes and toxic elements including radioactive remnants that, if not strategically discarded, may cause irreversible damage to environment and life.

Whereas the problem of waste disposal has been discussed for many years, the issue has been taking only larger proportions with passage of time. The growth of population and heavy industrialization are two prime factors contributing to increase in generation of wastes.

Let us now look at the different methods that can be used by citizens and municipal authorities use and can use for more efficient disposal of waste:

Prevent or minimize the generation of waste?—?Excessive and widespread usage of new products is a chief cause for waste generation and resultant pollution. Apparently, the population will continue to grow at an alarming rate and this makes it necessary to use and reuse products.

Reusing your old shopping bag instead of asking for a new one every time you visit the supermarket for grocery shopping, is a small but good way to contribute to this. Printing paper on both the sides is an effort that offices can make. There should be conscious decisions at personal and professional fronts to curtail the problem of growth in wastes.

Recycling?—?This is the next best step after attempts to minimize wastes. Recycling transforms wastes into useful new products. Industrial processing of paper, glass, aluminum and plastic is common and by segregating wastes into proper bins, you too can contribute to this environment-friendly practice.

It should also be remembered that the processing technologies are expensive and not all kinds of materials (even if they are made of paper, glass, aluminum or plastic) can be recycled. You can talk to your Calgary organics and waste management company to know how exactly recycling becomes feasible.

Composting?—?This involves decomposition of wastes from kitchen and garden by allowing the waste to stay piled up in a pit for a stretched period of time. As the materials decay and crumble into smaller bits, they turn into nutritive manure for plants. You need to be patient in this process and make sure that the heap is regularly tossed and turned. Composting is also done at larger scales by commercial organizations in big plots of land.

Incineration?—?The process of incineration involves waste combustion to transform it into base components. The heat generated in this method is trapped to derive usable energy. The common by-products are different gases and ash. As per the nature of materials being combusted, there is some pollution caused by this process. This can be curbed by use of specially designed filters. Incineration is a comparatively cheaper way to get rid of wastes and the volume of materials can be reduced as high as 90%. Strict vigilance is necessary to prevent unintentional leakage of gases from the combustion lines.

The waste that cannot be disposed of by any of the above mentioned methods may have to just end up in landfills. However this can be done in a sanitary way by preparing a safe base lining that can become a barrier between the waste and the underground water. Skilled manpower is required for the job.
