The Anatomy of a Great Tutor

Being a tutor is one of the most fulfilling jobs you’ll have. There is something about building a bond with a student and nurturing them to maximize their potential that is incredibly rewarding for all tutors and teachers.

Great students are made by great tutors.

Want to know how you can be a valuable tutor for your tutee? Here’s what you should be focusing on:

1. Building a strong relationship with the student

In order for the tutor to be successful, they need to gain the student’s trust and develop a relationship with them to motivate them to put their best foot forward.

It helps to connect with the student on a personal level to keep them interested. Ask them about their hobbies, like and dislikes, try and find some common ground.

2. Work to the student’s strengths

In the initial couple of sessions the tutor should work on identifying the student’s strengths. They may doubt their abilities to perform well, so it helps to restore their confidence by acknowledging their strengths.

3. Introduce real-life applications

"Why do I even need to learn algebra, I’m never going to use it"

One the biggest weaknesses of our school system is that there isn’t enough real-life applications; since students don’t know how their lessons are used in real-life they tend to be resistant to what they’re being taught.

A good tutor should be able to provide some professional context to what they are teaching. Even if they don’t have any real-life experience, they can still do some research on practical applications that help keep the tutee interested.

4. Understand that each student is different

A learning style that may work for student may not work for another. Instead of forcing a learning method onto a student, try something else when it doesn’t work. For some students simply reading their textbook will be enough to understand the content but other students may need exercises at the end of the chapter to get grip of it.

Younger students understand better with practical learning rather than reading material from books.

5. Think of them as your equal

Instead of trying to exercise authority over them like a teacher would, establish yourself as an equal. There’s no power structure between a tutee and tutor so don’t create any unnecessary barriers between you and them.

They need to know that you have their best interests in mind. Once you have a relationship of trust and mutual respect your tutoring lessons will be much more enjoyable and productive.
