Every electrical appliance you have will go through wear and tear over time, causing their quality to deteriorate within a few years. For this reason, it makes sense to get in touch with a registered and accredited electrician who can conduct tests to ensure the safety of your appliances. The same professional will provide an electrical report that can tell you a lot about the condition of your electrical appliances, too, so that you can make informed decisions when it comes to their repair or replacement. An expert electrician has been trained appropriately to identify any issues and recommend solutions to any problems they will find.

When electrical testing and inspection is concerned, keep in mind that both tasks must be conducted only by a registered technician who knows and understands BS 7671 or the requirements for electrical installations (IET wiring regulations). That way, they can test appliances and make sure that they comply with the UK standard for the safety of electrical installations. A qualified electrician can conduct PAT (portable appliances testing) on hand dryers, hobs, ovens, and other fixed installations.

As the landlord or property owner, it is your responsibility to think about PAT testing as part of routine maintenance and inspection of your property’s electrics. Keep in mind that the Health and Safety At Work act of 1974 requires you to have a maintenance program, which should cover the inspection and testing of the appliances on your property. The obligation is there when appliances are being used by your employees, tenants, or the public, or if you are using the hired electrical equipment. It applies when you are using services and repaired appliances, too.

At the end of PAT, the appliances are provided with an annual retest date, which will make it easier for you to remember the previous test date and ensure that the next testing can be completed. This test is typically conducted at tenanted and landlord properties, commercial premises, offices, shops, industrial premises, and any workplace where electrical appliances are used. While not a legal requirement, electrical testing and safety reports for your appliances will be helpful in ensuring their safety and proper function.
