Polyhydroxyalkonoate (PHA) is a naturally occurring thermoplastic or elastomeric material produced by bacteria. In other words PHA is polyesters produced during the fermentation of sugar to store energy. These materials are biodegradable in nature and when modified chemically show number of useful properties. In an industrial biosynthesis process, cultures of micro-organisms are allowed to grow until a certain concentration before being provided with a high carbon source material such as sugar (generally from sugarcane); the polyester is then extracted and processed.

On the basis of product segment, PHA can be classified as linear PHA and copolymerized PHA. Linear PHA finds major applications in pharmaceuticals and medical industries. Copolymerized PHA i.e. poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PBHA) is expected to witness demand as biodegradable packaging material since it exhibits higher toughness and better flexibility.
