Generally, people spend a considerable time while selecting a tennis racquet but they usually seem to neglect the quality of Tennis Strings. Not many people know that though almost all types of strings appear to be similar but they significantly vary in their construction, gauges and benefits. The material and construction of a Tennis String can have a direct impact on the performance of a racquet, and thereby, on the performance of a player. Therefore, it becomes essentially important to pay attention to the below listed three basic considerations while selecting the suitable Tennis Strings.

  • Construction: Tennis Strings are constructed with the use of different types of materials. Therefore, on the basis of construction, these strings can be classified into five major categories, namely, natural gut, multifilament synthetic, solid core synthetic, monofilament polyester and hybrid.

Among these categories, Natural Gut Strings are the most popular types of strings as provide much better performance than any other string. These strings are basically made up of thousands of natural fiber ‘ribbons’ of animal intestine. These natural fibers can maintain the gauge tension efficiently which, in turn, provides maximum ball feel. Though Natural Gut Strings are comparatively more expensive than other types, yet they are considered the best kind of playing strings.

  • Gauge: In simple terms, gauge refers to the thickness of the Tennis Strings. The most commonly preferred four types of gauges are 15, 16, 17 and 18 gauges. Higher number means that the gauge is thinner, whereas, the lowest number indicates that the string is thicker. However, the selection of gauge thickness depends on player to player requirements. The thinner gauge strings offer improved playability while thicker strings offer enhanced durability.
  • String Tension: Tension can be explained as how firmly the strings are attached to the ‘hoop’ of the tennis racquet. The degree of tightness directly affects the ball control of the racquet. Therefore, higher tensions provide increased control and a stiffer feel; on the other hand, lower tension provides a comfortable feel and more power.
