How does a metal detector work?

Metal detectors in the food industry function on the principle known as balanced coil system. Metal detectors fall into two main categories. The first category consists of systems which have a general purpose search head. These are capable of detecting ferrous metals, non ferrous metals and stainless steels. The other category consists of systems with a ferrous in foil search head. These can detect ferrous metals only within fresh and frozen products which are packed in a foil wrapping.

Metal detectors create a magnetic field using high frequency electric current. This is done using three coils. The center coil remains highly energized and creates a magnetic field. The coils which are placed parallel to each other act as receivers. When a contaminated product passes through the field, it creates a disruption which triggers a change in the voltage of every receiver. The machine identifies the presence of metal and triggers reject mechanism. The sensitivity of the machine is set to detect and reject the metal pieces of different sizes and metal compositions.
