No matter how good you are at your professional front, how much seasoned and polished you are still finding a job in new place comes with its own challenge. So does getting English teaching jobs in Turkey. You need to be well researched about the pros and cons of English teaching jobs in Turkey. As it is one of the few countries in the world that overlaps two different continents, Turkey has long been a popular destination for international travellers. Due to a steadily growing demand for the English language across much of the country, it is now also an increasingly popular destination for teaching English abroad. Job opportunities can be found in many parts of the country. Technically a degree in any subject is required for all teaching jobs; however, there are often not enough teachers to fill vacant positions so a TEFL certificate is sufficient for many employers.

Here we bring to your notice the pitfalls to be aware of getting English Teaching Jobs in Turkey:-

  1. Wide Cultural Diversity in Classrooms – As Turkey is a blend of east and west cultures you will notice this as first thing after landing in your classroom. Students might not be punctual in classrooms which might bother you as a teacher. But the bigger problem is their conventional way of learning where there is a lot of memorising grammar instead of learning how to speak, listen, read, write and understand. As the English communication skills not that developed students may be shy and might not participate in the regular classroom activities and interactions.
  2. Hidden Costs - Depending on where you live in Turkey, the cost of living will vary. Although many teaching jobs in Turkey only pay a relatively small salary, there are plenty of opportunities for most teachers to significantly increase their income by offering private tutoring. But the problem arises with the hidden costs of living in Turkey which is mainly with the resident Visa that is not always covered by your employer and costs you quite a deal of money to acquire. So before landing up with English teaching job in Turkey make sure to research about the resident Visa provision from your employer.
  3. Local Commuting – With the population of more than 15 million you are bound to face problems while commuting to and fro from your school/ university. You could find yourself stuck in traffic jams which will add up to your travel time and might disturb your routine as well.
  4. Weather Distress – TEFL or no other certificate can help you adapt with the mix of extreme weather of Turkey. Contrary to much advertised mild temperatures throughout the year snow and heavy rain is a common sight in the northern parts. Being a teacher bad weather cannot shield you from getting late for school/ university. To combat the bad weather during winters and rain you will have to leave early as well.
  5. Poor mismanagement of Schools – Yes some schools do have below par management wherein teachers’ well being, timely pay cheques and other obvious things are not properly taken care of which would be a challenge to combat.

So before you land up in Turkey for English teaching job make sure every aspect of your professional and personal life there is well researched.
