Key Features to Look into While Buying A Camping Fridge
Posted: Apr 21, 2018
Cold drinks, food that last longer, and ice cream—these are just some of the reasons why a camping fridge makes sense for trips. Being portable, it is a versatile travel companion that you can take anywhere you go, whether you are going to camping for a few days, or for fishing trips. Technological advancements have enabled more advanced cool storage facilities that can be better alternatives to conventional ice coolers, especially for long or extended outdoor trips. But what makes the camping fridge? Here are some key features to check when shopping for the one:
- The right size – A large camping fridge will obviously have more room for all the stuff you want to put in it, but that would mean greater current draw and taking up more space in your vehicle. So, think about it before your buy an oversized or large portable fridge. A fully loaded one could make it too heavy to the point where it can make it difficult to move around and run your battery system low very quickly.
When determining if the fridge is the right size, think about the number of cans you can fit in it. A 40L fridge can fit up to 60 cans, making it a standard size that should provide enough storage capacity for two to three people over a long weekend. If you are camping out much longer, consider 50L (72 cans) for an entire week for two people, or 80L (120 cans) if you are with a big group or family.
- Two-way or three-way? - The latter runs on either gas or AC/DC electricity, and the former runs on AC/DC electricity. Two-way fridges run on compressor technology like your home fridge, and they most commonly function with a 12-volt battery, so they will need to be linked to your vehicle’s electrical system, or to a 240-volt outlet when you are in a campsite. They could be practical if you have a solar panel in your car.
Three-way portable fridges run on 12 or 240 volts or on LPG, with the latter using gas flow heat exchangers instead of compressors. They may be quiet, but they are not as efficient as a two-way compressor fridge in terms of quickly cooling. However, they are versatile and run much longer.
- Features – Make sure that the camping fridge has a current drain, 12-volt connector, proper insulation, a durable construction, and a mounting hardware. Take note of the evaporator and vent positions, controls, baskets, and the availability of spare parts.
