At eMedEvents we are putting the spotlight for this month on hindrances faced by people with autism. With 3.5 million Americans diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the number of international CME conferences with specialization in autism spectrum disorder CME meetings have steadily been rising.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Autism is a development disorder typified with problems associated with social interaction, communication, repetitive and restrictive behavior. While the term ‘spectrum’ signifies strength and challenges a person with autism experiences. It is stated that autism is caused by combination of environmental and genetic factors. The signs of autistic behavior begins to show between the age of 2-3 and with early diagnoses benefits in support development, behavioral, learning, education and with certain types of family therapy may reduce some of the symptoms.

Autism spectrum disorders is sub-divided into three types:
  • Autistic Disorder – This is considered as a classic autism disorder, individuals with autistic disorder tend to have severe communication & social issues, language delays, unusual interests and behavior. Usually the symptoms appear before the age of 3.
  • Asperger Syndrome (AS) - is also known as Asperger’s, is considered as a ‘higher functioning’ end of the spectrum. People with AS do not have critical delays in cognitive and language development, however they do exhibit difficulties in social interaction, repetitive behavior and restrictive range of interest. Often, Asperger syndrome symptoms are confused with ADHD (hyperactive disorder).
  • Pervasive Development Disorder- The abbreviation given to Pervasive Development disorder –Not Otherwise Specified is PDD-NOS. It was initially considered as a separate sub-types of Autism that was later categorized into Autism Spectrum Disorder. PDD-NOS contributes to 47 percent of autism diagnoses. This type of autism as has fewer to milder symptoms of autism, which are mostly related to social and communication skills.

In autism, early intervention that includes comprehensive assessment, proper medication, and various types of therapies, specialized educational programs and support services plays pivotal role in improving the standard of living of an autistic person.
