- A hiccup is an unvolutentory movement ( spasm ) of the diaphragm (the muscle at the base of the lungs. ) This spasm is followed by quick closure of the vocal cords, which produces a distinctive sound.
- Hiccups often start for no apparent reason and usually disappear after a few minutes. Rarely, hiccups can last for days, weeks, or months.
- Hiccups are common and normal in newborns and infants.
Causes
- Abdominal surgery
- Any disease or disorder that irritates the nerves that control the diaphragm
(such as pleurisy or pneumonia)
- Hot, spicy foods and liquids
- Noxious fumes
- Stroke or tumor affecting the " hiccup center " in the rain
- Anemia
- Phrenic nerve irritation (tumors)
- There may be no obvious cause for hiccups.
Ayurvedic Aspect-
As per ayurveda,vitiated kaph obstrusts the path of vata,further cause pranavaha srotas,udaka vaha srotas and ann aha sroto dushti and leads to Hikka.
According to Ayurveda there are 5 types of hikka
Mahahikka
Gambhirahikka
Vyapetahikka
Kshudraja hikka
Annaja hikka
Treatment-
- Breathe repeatedly into a paper bag
- Drink a glass of cold water.
- Eat a teaspoon of
- Hold your breath

- Udavartacikitsa
- Use of Agni dipaka dravyas
- Svasakasahara chikitsa
- Jalapanam and ambusekam
- Vataanulomana chikitsa

Panchkarma-
- Local application of til tail or karpooradi tail to chest region
Svedam
- Nadisweda with dashmool kwath or Lavan sweda is very effective
Virecanam
- Purgation therapy with help of Kalyanakagudam – 25 gms with hot water morning at empty stomach (weekly once)
- Trvrt lehyam-20 ml with waters at bed time. or
- Haritakicurnam- 20 gms at bed tiem.
Kasayam
- Gandarvahastadikasayam – 60 ml before food morning and night.
- Bhandradi kasayam-60 ml before food morning and night.
- Ciravilvadi kasayam-60 ml before food morning and night.
- Balajirakadi kasayam-60 ml before food morning and night.
- Nayopayamkasayam -60 ml before food morning and night.
- Gandarvahastadikasayam -60 ml before food morning and night.
Curnam
- Vaisvanaracurnam -1 teaspoon with kasayam morning and night before food.
- Jathilavangadicurnam -1 teaspoon with honey morning and night before food.
- Karpuradicurnam – 3 gms with honey morning and night after food.
