Scientific research shows that most men suffering from the type 2 diabetes are at a higher risk of contracting prostate cancer than those not suffering any form of diabetes. Notably, the rate at which cancer claims lives is alarming. In most of the individuals infected by diabetes, the mitogenicforms of insulin and the androgen receptor in affected individuals are more strongly expressed; this is according to the expert research done by Helmholtz Zentrum and German Center for Diabetes Research. This is why most diabetes patients are at risk of contracting prostate cancer.

Not all diabetics risk getting prostate cancer

Not all men suffering from diabetes will develop prostate cancer. Some of the patients are less likely to develop the symptoms of cancer as shown by most clinical experiments. Most of the experiments done on cancer patients who had their prostate removed show that not all diabetic men are at risk of prostate cancer. Cases of metastases in lymph nodesare more frequent in prostate cancer patients who are also diabetic.

How does prostate carcinoma differ in men with and without diabetes?

Research done by scientists has established that men with diabetes have increased levels of androgen receptor (AR). Prostate carcinomas patients with diabetes exhibit high levels of insulin receptors of isoform A. For this reason, the rate of cell division and growth is very high in these men. Since there is formation of less protective estrogen receptor ligands in men, the steroid biosynthesis in the tumor is altered in patients with diabetes. The androgen-signaling pathway in tumors is further strengthened in this manner.

Men with type 2 diabetes experience poor prognosis to prostate carcinoma. This means that they have to undergo early diagnosis and treatment compared to men not suffering from diabetes. Early detection of cancer is essential in ensuring successful treatment of prostate cancer, especially where one is already diabetic.
