Possible Reasons For The Popularity Of Cushion Cut Engagement Rings
Posted: Apr 09, 2014
Some people will tell you that truly timeless designs and ideas will never really go out of style. They may be supplanted by the latest fashions and fads, but they will always be there, on the back burner, serving as the perfect alternative for someone seeking something a little more classic and less easily dateable.
A perfect example of this is cushion cut engagement rings. Once the paradigm for diamond rings – during the 19th century in particular – these rings eventually went out of style early into the next century, replaced with progressively bolder and more unusual cuts, then eventually with stones other than the diamond, until the engagement ring scene had reached the variety and diversity it boasts today.
But once that diversity had been achieved, what happened? Why, cushion cut engagement rings came back into vogue, of course! Currently, the cut is as sought after as it is rare, accounting for only five percent of the stock in certain retailers! As a result, diamonds with this type of cut have experienced a very natural hike in price, putting cushion cut engagement rings out of the range of most people’s pockets.
But how and why did this revival come to be? The exact reasons are unclear, but a number of theories can certainly be put forward, based on prior observations of similar tendencies and trends.
First of all, as mentioned, the sudden renewal of interest in cushion cut engagement rings can perhaps be attributed to its aforementioned classical and timeless beauty. This is a cut that will always make the stone look fantastic when worn on a finger, as it highlights its size and reflective qualities. The cushion cut therefore offers an attractive combination of classic elegance, affordability and size which certainly entices many a bride.
Another argument in favour of this revival is mankind’s endless penchant for vintage items. Fashion and trends seem to work cyclically, so that every few decades or so styles which used to be outdated come back into fashion and begin to be sought anew. This may perfectly well have been the case for the cushion cut, which had lain dormant for more than a century prior to the renewal of the general public’s interest in it.
Finally, the historic connotations of the cut in question – which was worn over the centuries by many nobles and high-profile names of polite society – might also have had an influence in the second wind it is currently experiencing.
Whatever the real reason may be, however, one thing is for certain – the cushion cut is coming back in style, and it does not look like it will go away any time soon!
