Big Changes Ahead For Telecoms

There is a lot of talk about the death of the ISDN telephone copper network, so let’s look at the impact this will have, what are the alternatives and why you should act now.

End of Life for ISDN

It was announced over 2 years ago now that the copper ISDN network will be completely switched off by 2025 and no more orders for new or additional lines will be accepted from 2020. It is many industry experts view that the 2025 deadline will be bought forward due to the added expense to maintain this network will price it out of the market sooner with many suppliers announcing several price increases every 12 months.

So why change?

Copper is very limiting in the functionality it can be used for and degrades quickly. To meet the needs of modern and future business needs it is a natural progression to move to an Internet Protocol (IP) fibre network that is easier to maintain and isn’t going to degrade. Another term commonly used for this alternative is VoIP which stands for Voice over IP.

What are the Alternatives?

There are 2 alternatives when looking in to replacing your ISDN telephone lines. Firstly, you can stay with a premise based telephone system and SIP Trunks which are virtual telephone lines delivered over an internet connection or secondly a Hosted or Cloud based telephone system where the only telecoms hardware you have on site are the phones. These connect back to a cloud-based telephone system using an internet connection.

Many businesses preferred choice is to go Cloud based to truly future proof their telecoms, take advantage of the many features available along with Disaster Recovery being built in as standard.

VoIP in Business

So, what are the features of VoIP that can make a real difference in your business:

  • Free Mobile Softphone – VoIP offer a free mobile softphone app for both iPhone and Google phones. This turns your mobile in to an extension of your phone system allowing you to make and receive calls, place calls on hold, transfer to any extension as well as record calls from anywhere you have a 3G/4G or WIFI connection. True mobility allowing you to work from any location.
  • Control your desk phone from your PC – Adding control of your desk phone to your PC give you greater control of call, easier control of call forwarding, set your presence which will automatically divert calls based on this and now comes with video conferencing including desktop sharing.
  • Disaster Recovery – VoIPoid have disaster recovery at the heart of its cloud platform. For example, if there was a power cut our system would recognise that it is unable to deliver a call because of this and refer to it’s backup plan to route the call. That backup plan could be to send calls to another site, mobile or group of mobiles. As soon as power is restored our system will revert back to its main call routing without intervention.
  • How easy is it to switch?

VoIPoid have put a lot of thought in to this to make it as simple as possible. Our online configurator is unique in the market in allowing you to configure your own cloud-based system online without the need of a sales visit and features being forced on you that you probably don’t need. Simply follow the 9-step tool to build and order your system online choosing the options you want not what a supplier wants to sell you. With online chat and a dedicated team available on 0333 006 974 to help you if you need it, why don’t you give it a try at: www.voipoid.co.uk/online-configurator

    Why should I act now?

Firstly, peace of mind. Telecoms will always be an integral and import part of any business and best practice would dictate making sure this is future proof. Secondly, cost savings. Switching to a cloud-based system now will mean any business will avoid the inevitable and many price increases with legacy copper lines. Thirdly, you want to miss that inevitable rush as the deadline to change gets nearer.
