Scaffolding is an elevated and temporary platform or assembly structure that is used at different heights while constructing or repairing a building. It is, basically, a robust assembly of frames and planks that are fastened using sturdy bolts and couplers. Carpenters, construction workers, maintenance workers, electricians and painters all use scaffolds to reach the areas that are inaccessible using a simple ladder. Right from steel, aluminum, iron to bamboo, different materials are used to lend structural strength to these scaffoldings. This article throws light upon the need, types and other aspects of Scaffolding.

When Scaffolding Is Used?

Scaffolding is used where a stable working platform either for construction, repairing and maintenance is required. These purposes may include:

  • To provide a steady working platform for workers carrying out the construction work
  • To carry out maintenance of the exteriors of an existing structure like painting, cleaning, etc
  • As stair towers for an easy access to raised platforms like flat roofs
  • As cradles, hanging platforms or suspended platforms such as for bridge maintenance
  • Use as a temporary roof, walkway, bridge, storage sheds, ramp, etc.
  • For bracing structural props
  • For setting stages for filming and theatre purposes
  • To reinforce river bank or lake-side
  • To install sign-boards frames and advertising hoardings
  • To stabilize and keep a structure or tall object vertical

Types Of Scaffolding

  • Self Supported: Self supported scaffolding is supported by poles or frames that are fixed into the ground. Mobile scaffolding with wheels, fabricated frames, bricklayer's squares and tube & coupler scaffolds are the common examples of these scaffoldings.
  • Suspended: Suspended scaffolding also has a platform with supports. However, this support is obtained an overhead structure. This type of scaffolding suspends in the air with the help of ropes and pulleys. Adjustable single and double point scaffolds, scaffolds, multiple point scaffolds, float and catenary are some of the major types of Suspended scaffoldings.
  • Mobile: These are manually propelled scaffoldings that have wheels attached at the bottom. The assembled scaffolding can be pushed by the worker from place to place. These wheels can be locked into a place with the use of caster fastening pins, which prevents unnecessary rolling of the scaffolding.

Why Scaffolds Collapse?

Despite the use of the best iron, steel, aluminum and bamboo material in manufacturing, scaffolds still collapse. There are few reasons behind this:

  • The use of Scaffold planks over higher spans
  • Overloading and extra stressing of the planks
  • Inadequate scaffolding foundation
  • Uneven floor or ground surface
  • Damaged or faulty scaffolding parts and assemblies
