There are numerous large-scale companies which are competing in the market to exceed their efficiency. Markets – dominated by higher prices and higher volume could be controlled if the companies reduce the energy wastage and input costs of all units of production. This, in turn, will generate savings and productivity to keep the prices at the lowest. Being environmentally efficient allows recycling and reusability of materials and products.

Engaging in an eco-business will allow the organizations to save the environment with the help of their products. There have been many companies adhering to green policies which have subsequently reduced the harmful emissions and waste. The concept of eco-business is framed around improved eco-efficiency, performance and quality. This concept is widely accepted by the businesses and often see it as an advantage.

Green businesses have programs focused on the below-mentioned areas:

Minimizing water use.

Recycling materials and packaging.

Reducing waste and other toxins, and

Preserving energy and controlling carbon.

  1. Maintaining Water Levels: There was a recent survey report, which stated that global water consumption has tripled over the last 50 years. There are chances that the demand for water may exceed the supply by 40%. The availability of fresh water is scarce due to pollution and climate change. The use of water in industries is quite extensive and can be understood by the fact that ‘it takes 80 liters of water to produce $1 of industrial product’. Let’s take a look at the following figures: it takes 120 liters of water to produce a glass of wine, 75 liters for a glass of beer, 234,000 liters to produce a ton of steel and 1300 liters to grow a kilogram of barley. A glimpse at these figures is enough to make us realize the value of water. Beverages companies such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola to understand the need for water conservation and have been extending their water goals – claiming to achieve water neutral (putting the equal quantity back into the system as much they are consuming). Even though when a company claims water neutrality, the harm is already done and hence cannot be revived. The ecological effects of diverting water are several. Still, following the going green ethics, several companies are improvising on their water management practices.
  2. Materials and Packaging: The efforts of increasing materials efficiency are similar to efforts for the conservation of water and energy. Saying this, it’s important to understand the endeavor Putin to ensure that minimal material quantity goes into the product. Materials if used, are better and more suitable which are not only recyclable and but also less harmful to the environment. As the technology advances, the attempts are finally showing signs of success, for e.g., a pound of aluminum can bow produce more cans when compared to the production some 40 years ago. Companies following green practices are engaging in ‘smart packaging’, to reduce cost and packet size – which will lead to a decline in materials and freight charges. The strategy followed by eco-businesses is to reduce dependence on nature for everything.
  3. Waste and Toxins: As we know, waste adds an unnecessary cost towards disposal and recycling. There are many companies which are now using the discarded plastic as a supply to the manufacturers. Attempts are speeding to reduce the cost of waste disposal and lower the requirement for raw materials. While some companies are working towards recyclability of the product, ensuring careful designs and eliminating harmful contents, Dell, on the other hand, is involved in free recycling of computer equipment regardless of the make and manufacturer.
  4. Carbon and Energy: The initial savings for an organization starts with switching to green and cost-saving equipment. A minor change can bring enormous change to the revenues of a company. Adapting to new policies and regulations, fluctuating gas and oil prices along with the risks of climate change are certain factors for an escalated growth of product innovation and efficiencies. Adoption of methods of green energy will help in achieving new environment-friendly technologies, introduce the new innovations to broader markets and showcase the commercial value of eco-efficiency.
