PhD scholars are required to write a number of assignments, essays, dissertation etc during their post graduation course. However, before you start writing a dissertation, you need to collect data for the research. Collection and analysis of data are important aspects of your PhD research work. Proper data collection includes collection of facts and figures relevant to the body of knowledge. The manner of data collection and data analysis depends on the research method used to conduct the research. Different research methods exist, hence, you should use the most suitable method for your research projects.

Students can collect data by either using data gathering techniques or existing data collected by someone else, if it is relevant to the purpose of the research. Searching and gathering good and correct data takes a great deal of hard work. Before starting the procedure of data analysis, the accuracy of the collected data should be verified. After collecting proper data, its proper analysis is required. For any research, data analysis is crucial as it provides details of different concepts, theories, frameworks and methods used. It finally helps in arriving at conclusions and establishing the hypothesis.

In any research project, data analysis is very important because it is a process that is often used to examine, clean, transform and modify data with an objective to establish a certain conclusion for a given situation. Data analysis can be categorise into two different types: qualitative or quantitative. However, the method of analysis solely depends on the type of data collected. In qualitative research, any non-numerical data such as text or individual words are analysed. Whereas, quantitative data analysis focuses on measurement of the data, uses statistics to get results and conclusions. In some research work, both forms of analysis are used together.

Data Analysis is very useful and beneficial. Among the various benefits, the most important ones are:

  • It helps in organising the findings from different sources of data.

  • It helps in breaking a macro problem into micro parts.

  • It can be used as a filter when it comes to acquiring meaningful insights out of huge data collection.

With the help of proper statistical treatment, data analysis helps in keeping people’s prejudices away from the research conclusion.

In data analysis, it is important to choose a methodology to analyse data because if it is not chosen than data can neither be collected nor analysed. The methodology should be present in the dissertation since it will help readers understand which methods have be used during the research and what kind of data has been collected.
