A Guide to Portable Handheld Microscope

Portable handheld microscopes have changed the concept of traditional microscopes on its head. Bulky microscopes that once were rooted to work benches have been replaced by light portable ones that can be easily carried around – either for research, science and education or fun and hobbies. Most importantly, these may be small in size but are definitely not found wanting in power, performance or magnification.

A portable microscope apart from being easy to handle is also dust proof and water resistant and can capture high resolution photos and videos. Most importantly, it is equipped with LED lights so that the specimens can be seen clearly and brightly.

Here is a detailed guide to portable handheld microscopes.

Resolution

The resolution of a microscope matters a great deal as the clarity of the images depend on it. The higher it is, the easier will it be for the user to analyse the specimen. The resolution levels vary between models but if budgetary constraints are not there, it is preferable to opt for one with at least 2.0 megapixels. There are a few models that offer different resolutions for video and still images but generally, playing video drops resolution levels as it takes a toll on processor, lens and the hardware that runs the microscope.

Magnification

For magnification, the optical level should be considered instead of the digital one. While it is true that many manufacturers of handheld microscopes are designing products that offer high quality still and moving images, digital quality still leaves a lot to be desired. However, before buying a portable handheld microscope, it should be a good idea to opt for one with an optical magnification of around 220x. There are portable microscopes too with 50x lens that are perfect for science education, forensics, quality control and even law enforcement. These can be attached to iPhone, iPad for live display of images and video and these can be streamed over Wi-Fi to remote locations.

Software

One of the major issues that have to be taken into account when buying a portable handheld microscope is the software that comes with it. Some microscopes have in-built software while for others it has to be bought separately and installed. This is important as the cost of the product will depend on this factor. While buying software too, its functions should be scrutinised first. Some allow image and video download to a laptop or computer or iPhone while others permit analysis and comparisons of images.

Convenience

A few models are quite easy to set-up while others are not so user-friendly. The most convenient ones are those with settings that do not have to be adjusted from scratch every time before use as the last used settings stay in the memory of the microscope. There are also units with LED lights that make it easy to have a clear view of the specimen even in testing outdoor environments.

Before buying handheld microscopes, all these factors should be taken into account.
