Some Key Tips to selecting Memory Care Residences

One of the most important things to remember when interviewing memory care residences in Houston is that their role is to take care of those living with Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders and providing assisted living. With the role being one that involves people caring for your loved one full-time, much trust must be gained quickly.

Therefore, some fundamental questions should be asked in an initial interview to help gather basic information about the facility and their staff. It is also essential to know the level and amount of care guaranteed for the residents they care for, and their families.

Plan Ahead with Questions for the Interview

Some questions should include:

  • How do you choose and maintain your staff? And, how are they initially trained? Then, how is your employee training maintained?
  • How many of your staff would be working with your loved one needing care? A single employee or would it vary?
  • What is the availability or schedule of your staff? Is your team available outside of regular work hours? What if an emergency occurs?
  • Are there activities specially designed for memory care residents?
  • How do you handle caring for residents as their disease progresses?
  • Are family visits allowed and how do you structure the visits?
  • During the holidays and special events, do you have special programs outlined for the family to interact with their loved ones?
  • Do you keep and send medical record updates to the family when there are changes?
  • Is there an executive director that oversees day to day management of the facility? Are they available to discuss details of the care given to our loved one?
  • How long has your facility been in business?
  • How many residents do you care for regularly? Is there a possibility of understaffing?
  • Can we contact current or previous family members whose loved ones stayed at your facility? Do you have references available?

Keep it Professional, but Pleasant

Keep the questions professional and straightforward, intending to gain honest answers from the care provider’s representative.

With well-planned questions and a friendly demeanor, you can find an Alzheimer assisted living residence that fits in well with your family and your loved one living with a memory disorder.
