Gemstones are classified into two categories that are Precious Stones and Semi-precious stones. Most of the sellers are familiar with the terms and uses them. However, many in this industry do not like these terms.

Precious Stones

Diamond, Rubies, Sapphire and Emeralds are mainly considered as Precious Stones. Some people also included Opal, Jade or Pearls in this class. The class division of stones made many people believe that "precious stones" are more valuable and of importance than "semiprecious stones".

Semiprecious Stones

This name is used for all the other varieties of gemstones. Any stones that is suitable for one’s adornment is semiprecious stone. Agate, Amethyst, Amber, Aventurine, Aquamarine, Chrysocolla. Chalcedony, Chrysoprase. Garnet, Citrine, Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Moonstone, Onyx. Rhodonite, Sunstone, Tiger’s eye, Tanzanite, Topaz, Turquoise and many other stones falls on this "semiprecious stones" category.

There are many protests to discontinue the word "semiprecious" but this word is in use from more than 150 years, to discontinue now. In professional use this term is so popular that it will be difficult to totally remove it. Many people really love this term.

Grading of Stones

The grade of any stones is considered only by the quality of the gemstone and the marketability, i.e. potential price, color and clarity. Many precious stones are of low price than many semiprecious stones, placing them in low grade.

Rarity

There are more semiprecious stones than precious stones. One can’t consider only precious stones to be rare. The terms have nothing to do with rarity.

Beauty and Desirability

This is mostly based on the observer’s opinion. Opal the semiprecious stone may be placed higher if it is showed to some random individuals along with other stones.

Value

Many semiprecious stones have much higher values than some precious stones per carat.

These results shows that semiprecious stones and precious stones were termed by a certain group of people in 1800s but now there is no proper way to differentiate them.

One must not look for price while choosing a gemstone suggested by an astrologer. He or she should look for the importance of the stone, which makes the stone really precious.

Semiprecious Stone God Statues

From Vedic ages, God statues are being made from Semiprecious Stones. Worshipping a God statue made from semi-precious stone is truly auspicious in our Vastu Shastra. These stones are carved with precisions by some great artisans to give life to the deity. These statues are made considering mostly the relations between a stone and the deity. If the statues are made in accordance to these relations these become very powerful.
