Congratulations on choosing to open your business in Tanzania. It is now time that you look into getting your web presence taken care of. Unfortunately there isn’t enough information on the right way to go about putting your business online in Tanzania. We get asked by a lot of clients at LORDEYS on the basic steps of doing so. To save our clients valuable time we have the following advise.

  • Register your business name.
  • Before building your website, make sure you have reserved your business name. As of March 2018 it usually takes two days to register your business name through, and its free. The whole process takes no longer than five minutes using the Brela official government agency. You will need to provide Brela with your company formation details, owners information, type of business etc. They don’t ask for much but it helps the government determine what tax bracket to a location to your business. Once your name is registered proceed to register your actual company. Why? You will need to display your business registration number on your site.

  • Get a proper.tz domain.
  • There is no doubt that getting a top-level domain name (ccTLD) is better for SEO and localization. A.tz domain is better than a.com, Google likes it, Tanzanian business all tend to use.tz, they are more trusted. You want to head over to the Tanzania Network Information Centre (tzNIC) website as it’s the only official registrar of.tz domains.

  • Select a good webhost.
  • There are very few webhosts with good POPs near or in Tanzania. The location of the data centers of your web host affects your site’s load speed and reliability. We recommend a good webhost on VPS with CDN setup through CDNetworks( Dar es salaam, Tanzania ) or Cloudflare ( Mombasa, Kenya ). To make your work easier we recommend hiring a server management professional on your own as it tends to be more expensive using your web host.

  • Focus on building a light bi-lingual mobile website.
  • With 4G speeds that’s only available in Tanzanian big cities like Dar es salaam, its recommended to keep your website as light as possible. This means fewer animations, videos, and no unoptimized images. Unlike most developed countries, 93% of Tanzanians browse the web on mobile devices. Focus more on your mobile website. Do not underestimate the power of localization by adding Swahili language to your site. You can contact LORDEYS if you need to build your site for Tanzania. We have people on the ground with experience in working for foreign companies entering Tanzania.

  • Don’t forget SEO ( onsite and offsite ).
  • Google is not blocked in Tanzania and is the preferred method of searches ( Tanzania Google https://www.google.co.tz/). If you are selling a product or service its also important to note that a lot of Tanzanians live on Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook. These two social networks are where many Tanzanians spend half their time online ( if not all of it ). It’s wise to target marketing and brand exposure on Google, Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram.

With these few pieces of advising you are ready to put your business online in Tanzania. As we have laid out the key pieces of information its now up to you to get the ball rolling and quickly start getting calls from prospective Tanzanian clients.
