It is also known as spastic colon or irritable colon. This cause great distress to patient. Near about 40% of population is suffering from this disease. Women are more sufferers for this problem. Family history is also responsible for this disease. Patients suffering from IBS have unusually sensitive intestines.

This will cause abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating and alternation of bowl habits that an cause either diarrhoea or constipation to person,abdominal distension, nausea and sensation of incomplete evacuation.

It also accomplished with symptoms of the upper gastrointestinal tract (GI) like heartburn, chest pain and dysphagia. It had somatic and psychologicalsymptoms like fatigue, irritability, headache, anxiety, depression, and even urologic dysfunction and gynecologic symptoms.——-

Concept of IBS in Ayurveda

According to Sushruta the sixth kala is known as Grahanidharakala or pittadharakala. Which covers the part of gastro-intestinal tract which extends from lower part of stomach (pyloric part) to ileocaecal junction. It’s main function is to hold solid and liquid foods which is propelled from amashaya and on its way to the pakvashaya, for the proper action of digestive juice upon it.

Pittadharakala function-

  1. Digestion of food and
  2. Absorption of digested substance.

The food which we take is digested by jatharagni and converted in to diajestive juice which helps in body formation.

Due to mandagni food are not digested properly which form apakvaahar rasa which is called as Ama.Thisama goes in to small channels causing stroto-avarodhi.e blockage of channels.And forming a disease called as Grahaniroga.

Causes: the cause of the disease is still unknown.It may be caused due to miscommunication between brain with intestinal tract which results in abnormal muscle contraction or spasms. the spasms may cause diarrhea or constipation

Other causes are-

  1. stress or psychological issues.
  2. Hormonal changes like during menstrual cycle.
  3. Some antibiotics can cause digestion problem
  4. Infection of diagestive tract ex-salmonella
  5. Family history

Sign and symptoms :

Muhurbadhammuhurdravam?

Stool become sometimes loose or constipated.It is combined with cramps and pain in stomach also

Frequent Constipation (stool become dry and hard)

Feeling of Incomplete bowel movement

Frequent loose motion

Alternating between diarrhea and constipation.

Stool with mucus discharge
