How to decide for courses in different pharmacy colleges in India

Pharmacy is one of the popular fields among students. The pharmacy courses vary from one country to another. In India, the courses start from diploma level to doctoral level. Read on to know more on different courses to decide for you:

Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm)

This course has a duration of total two years, along with a 3 months internship (practical training) at a hospital that is recognized by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). To apply for this course the eligibility is 10+2 with mandatory subjects being Physics and Chemistry, and the third one can be Biology or Mathematics. For most of the pharmacy colleges in India, a minimum of 80% is required in both theory and practical class to get enrolled.

On the completion of this diploma program, one can find jobs in the pharmaceutical industry or set up her own store after registering with the PCI or the State Pharmacy Council. This course does not provide any specialization but provide basic concepts. Students who have done this course can also get admission into the second year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy program.

Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)

This undergraduate course is of 4 years. Applying students should have passed 10+2 with Physics and Chemistry as mandatory subjects plus anyone of these - Mathematics / Computer Science / Biotechnology / Biology. Graduates from pharmacy colleges in Bangalore and other cities of India can have several career opportunities in both the sectors - government and private.

Candidates undergo practical training in pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, hospitals or CSIR research labs after completing 3rd year or 4th year.

Doctor in Pharmacy (Pharm.D)

Introduced in 2008 by the Government of India and PCI, it is a 6-year (5 years study and 1 year residency) doctoral program in pharmacy. Educational requirements include 12th standard/PUC/PDC / H.Sc / Intermediate with Physics.

As lateral entry, B.Pharma graduates can be admitted in to the 4th year of the Pharm.D program. For them it will be a 3-year course (Pharm.D Post Baccalaureate), which has 2 years of study and 1 year residency.

Students considering these courses if cannot make it to the top Pharmacy colleges in Bangalore or other cities, should not get depressed. In fact, they should ensure that the institution they are choosing is approved by PCI and AICTE. Most prestigious institutes in India may not be the best for you, so focus on choosing a college that offers specialized pharmacy courses only, like Krupanidhi College of Pharmacy.
