Summary: Whiskey (whisky), is as much as spirit type as it is a broad characterisation of spirits. This article looks at what is whisky and its known popularity with people across the globe.

Whiskey (or whisky), is as much as spirit, as it is a broad characterisation of spirits. Indian whisky is widely available across the country and includes Indian scotch and Indian single malt whisky, amongst others. There are many popular Indian whisky names, as well as Indian whisky brands, and one can get a sense of all the different brands and names that are on offer by visiting any liquor outlet or doing some research online.

Classification of Whisky

Many rules govern what exactly can be classified as a whisky. Those that are not whisky enthusiasts may well wonder the significance of the difference or regarding the difference between a bourbon and a scotch, both of which are types of whiskies. However, these differences matter a great deal to a large segment of whisky aficionados.

Country of Origin - One factor going in to distinguish the whisky names and whisky brands is the country of origin, i.e., a whiskey or a whisky, can be even spelt differently where it is produced. Whiskey made in Ireland and the United States has usually spelt "Whiskey," while that made in Scotland, Canada, Japan and elsewhere is usually spelt "Whisky." Therefore, regional grammar plays a role in why customers see both Scotch whisky and Irish whiskey on the shelves of bars or liquor stores. Another common type of whisky is Scotch whisky, which is distilled in Scotland and aged in oak barrels for at least three years.

Whisky that is distilled in India is called Indian Whisky and includes a broad array of spirts, such as Indian scotch and Indian single malt. There are many different Indian whisky names as well as Indian Scotch whisky brands, and one can get a sense of all the different brands and names that are on offer by visiting any liquor outlet or by researching online.

Ingredients or Grain - The difference between the different types of whiskies such as bourbon, rye, or scotch is a little more complex. Along with country of origin of the spirit, the type of grain used in the distillation process also determines the kind of whiskey or whisky. Different grains produce, in the final spirit, different taste characteristics. Coupled with varying distillation methods that vary by region and producer, customers are exposed to a wide range of flavours that range from sweet to spicy and from smooth to bold and smoky.

There are many different types of whiskies available such as bourbon, which is a type of American whiskey that is made from a mash of at least 51% percent corn.

Knowing the origin and content of the spirt is a great way of finding good whisky brands and understanding the different varieties in the market, so that the next time you know exactly what it is that you're drinking.
