Separation of Gas from Liquid: Use of the Demister in Packing Towers

Packing towers are useful for separation of gas and liquid or liquid and liquid mixtures. They make them to different sizes and specifications depending on the application. Glycol dehydration is a method of removing water from the gas or natural gas liquids. There are many types of glycol but the triethylene glycol (TEG) is the most common.

Packing Internals in a TEG Contactor

The structured packing internals in a TEG Contactor should include a demister. It also includes a trough distributor with parting block and a packing hold down with a high performance distributor. Then, you have the packed section with the packing support along with the inlet gas distributor. You may also use a bubble cap tray contactor.

The TEG regeneration system will have its own set of internals. First is the Still Column- Rich TEG Reflux exchanger. This unit helps reduce TEG losses. For this you must allow some water and some change in the temperature of the rich TEG. Next is the rich-lean heat exchanger. This further raises the temperature of the rich TEG. It reduces foaming tendencies.

The flash drum helps degas the TEG. The liquid hydrocarbon gets decanted and it gets sent to the lean-rich heat exchanger. This is for the heat recovery. You can raise the temperature of the rich TEG to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. To reach the higher temperature you must use the reboiler. Vertical separation tower

For the demister, we use the vertical separation tower in most cases. The mixed feed with water and gas-liquid mixture gets sent into the tower. Heat gets applied causing the vapor and gas to rise up. It gets blocked by the demister pad at the top end of the tower. The liquid falls down and collects at the bottom of the tower.

Use of the Demister Pad

The demister pad finds a use for removing the entrained liquid droplets in the gas stream. So, we use this in the gaseous phase and ‘demist’ it. They fix the demister pad a little below the top outlet for vapor in the vapor-liquid separator. The working principle of the demister to join the smaller drops and make it into a big one. This it does by blocking the path of the smaller droplets. There is an increase in the collision among the liquid droplets. When there is enough droplets clinging together, it falls out of the gas phase because it cannot rise with the gas. There is a path on the top for the passage of gas and so the gas passes through without any problems. The demister is available in different sizes.
