The data center is not built in a day. It takes lots of planning, design considerations, and careful execution to construct a flawless data center.

And needless to mention, any sort of even the smallest faults in data center design and build can always be a catastrophic aspect for the organization. Therefore, you need to avoid such disasters by paying heed to the most essential steps while planning, designing, constructing and testing the data center.

Here are some of the major steps which are essential for a good data center construction:

  • Size The Power Capacities Carefully:

If you go according to the nameplate power ratings, you can easily end-up over-provisioning the capacities of the data center.

Therefore, the correct approach to design the data center power is to take note of the historical power consumption style and use this to draw the conclusions for the power capacities.

  • Keep Track Of Single Point Failure:

If you connect lots of components to a solitary power line, this may result in a single point of failure in the power system of your data center.

Let us understand this by an example:

Suppose when the power required is 1000 KVA, the UPS systems have an inbuilt redundancy and three 500 KVA UPSs are connected to a single PDU (power distribution unit), if the PDU fails, all the UPS systems are bound to go down.

  • Choose The Data Center Equipment Carefully:

One of the major causes of data center disasters is the choice of wrong equipment.

For instance, the recently formulated servers have leading value for power factor. This implies that the servers draw leading currents. And for the base angle of voltage and current, the current tends to lead the voltage value.

All due to this, it is important to choose the equipment with utmost care.

  • When Designing The Automatic Transfer Mechanism:

The current normal generation UPS systems work far from the supports from transformers and need an input-neutral connection.

As soon as the generator starts, the UPS would have no neutral terminal and this could lead to a floating neutral, which in turn results in floating load. No wonder, this could lead to tripping or freezing.

To avoid this, you can use an automatic transfer switch which adjoins the overlapping neutral mechanism.

  • Server Cabling And UPS:

When the data center construction takes place, the server cables and the UPS systems too hold a great importance.

However, most of the organizations choose the wrong size of the cables which can result in excess heating, voltage drops, and resultant overload. Therefore, consider getting server cables a bit bigger in size.

So these are some of the measures which can prevent the probable disasters in a data center.

And most importantly, whether for a small task such as fiber optic installation or the construction of an entire data center, you need to consult only the most experienced servicemen for the purpose.
