Most TV shows or movies cast by Roku media players plays sound in stereo format. However, there are some models and content which support surround sound. If your device doesn’t decode surround sound directly, then you can get it decoded through AVR, sound bar, and ARC’s.

The steps to configure surround sound on Roku device are mentioned here as under:

Connect your Roku player

The very first step to begin setup is; connect one end of Roku player to the HDMI cable. The cable must be the high-speed premium cable. If you are using a stick, then connect it to the HDMI port of TV directly.

Using HDMI for audio

To get best audio experience, it is recommended to use HDMI cable for audio output. A 4K or HDR device must satisfy the requirements which are mentioned in its guided manual.

After connecting Roku to the TV via HDMI cable, you are now required to connect external devices to the Roku. The devices connected externally must match the requirements of Roku.

  1. Connecting to the Surround sound supported TV
  • If your TV supports surround sound, then connect the other end of HDMI cable to the TV input port.
  1. Connect to AVR or sound bar with HDMI ports
  • If there is no direct surround sound option available on your TV, then you can connect your device to the AVR available in the market. You can then change the audio or video format easily. Connect another end of the HDMI cable to the sound bar or AVR.
  • Now connect the output of your AVR to the input of your TV via HDMI cable. If no cable port is available, you can connect it to AV ports.

Note: You can’t configure AVR mode as easily as it sounds. It requires patience and time. So, don’t get upset if this process takes time.

  1. Connect Audio return channel capable TV to the sound bar

If your TV has ARC input or soundbar supports ARC, then you can implement this process. It is quite simpler and easier than former one. Your sound bar will here act as a medium for converting the input to output surround sound. You can easily switch between audio and video from your TV thereafter. If you find any problem, you can read the manufacturer support page.

  1. Using S/PDIF for audio

Assuming that there is no HDMI port available on your TV and soundbar. Under such condition, there is nothing to worry. Your Roku player has optical audio port given at the back. Use this port and follow the below-mentioned steps to configure this technique.

  • If no HDMI port is seen on your AVR, then check for at least one optical port on your Roku.
  • If HDMI port is available on AVR, then connect another end of HDMI cable to the TV output port.
  • Connect the optical output to the optical input of your TV. Now, connect the output port of your TV to the input port of your soundbar.

In this way, you can configure surround sound on your Roku player. In case of any problem, feel free to call at Roku support number.
