Will the Honda City Ever Get Auto Stop Start?

One of the most criticised aspects of the new 2018 Honda City is a lack of an auto stop start system. This is a surprising omission considering that Honda is well regarded as a car manufacturer that prioritises eco friendly technology and fuel efficiency. At the moment there has been no official statement on the lack of auto stop start systems on the new City, but it seems to be an obvious feature to include. For the uninitiated, we will take a more detailed look at what the auto stop start system is and why you will see it increased inclusion in car design in the years to come.

An Auto Stop Start Primer

The auto stop start system is also known as an idle stop, and it’s designed to lower car emissions and promote fuel efficiency. Essentially its purpose is to automatically turn off the engine when it’s not required for short periods of time without compromising safety. As an example: if you’re waiting at a traffic signal, the engine would stop automatically and then turn back on when you wanted to move off again. Studies have proved that a car fitted with this type of system can save on average 10% annually on fuel costs.

How Does This Technology Work?

This type of auto stop start system can only work on cars that have electric driven fuel pumps and power steering systems. The power has to be cut and restored very quickly to be effective, and this can only be carried out electronically and controlled by a computer. In a very short period of time the spark must be cut to the ignition, then the fuel flow must be halted, and this has to occur moments after your foot has touched the brake and you’ve come to a complete halt. Then as you take your foot off the brake, the same process occurs in reverse to provide the power you need as you then press the accelerator.

Maintaining Other Operations

Another key factor to the success of these types of auto stop start systems is the continuation of other operations at the same time. Earlier incarnations for testing would turn off every system in the car when the car came to a complete halt. This would play havoc with the average driver today if their AC, infotainment and sat nav all stopped working every time the car stopped at a traffic light.
