Why Go For Emerald Engagement Rings?

When one stops to ponder the field of jewellery, it is hard to fathom exactly how the diamond has come to rule the ranks as much as it does. When compared to other options such as sapphire or emerald engagement rings, diamond rings have neither the history, the significance, the symbolism nor the reputation of their competitors. Only an unbelievable centuries-long marketing and hype campaign (started well before those terms had even been coined) has put diamonds in the prominent position they occupy today.

Still, people who know a little more about jewellery than the average person on the street recognise the value of jewellery items made from other precious or semi-precious stones. Sapphire, ruby or emerald engagement rings may not have the dazzling appeal of their younger ‘sibling’, the diamond, but they offer a more classic sort of beauty that will certainly appeal to customers looking for elegance and sophistication from their engagement ring.

Emerald engagement rings, in particular, have a number of factors working in their favour at the moment of purchase, not the least of which is their long and distinguished history, which harks back nearly 5000 years and is littered with recognisable names that helped shape human history.

But the main selling point of emeralds is not their history or their celebrity associations (although these do help) but their mystique, charm, and elegant appearance. When worn on a finger or around one’s neck, an emerald gives a real impression of classic sophistication and has a dazzling, yet understated appeal that will surely resonate with at least a portion of the engagement-ring-buying public. These qualities are also what have made emerald engagement rings popular and timeless choices for expressing one’s love for their partner.

Potential buyers will also be delighted to learn that, when weighed pound for pound, the value of emeralds surpasses that of diamonds. It is unclear how the misconception arose that diamonds are the most valuable stones (their visual dazzle, perhaps, or the aforementioned hype marketing), but the truth is that emeralds out-value diamonds most of the time, while at once remaining more reasonably priced and not suffering from the absurd overpricing diamonds are often subject to.

There is, therefore, clearly a lot to be said for emeralds as engagement ring topping stones. And fortunately, there continues to be enough savvy shoppers who realize this and keep the stone near the top of the precious-gem jewellery charts.
