Onam is an annual Hindu festival originating in the state of Kerala in India. It falls in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam, which overlaps in the Gregorian calendar with August-September.onam Festival is the largest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. Onam Festival falls during the Malayali month of Chingam (August - September) and marks the return of the legendary King Mahabali. The Onam Carnival lasts ten days and offers the best of Kerala culture and tradition. The lavishly decorated Pookalam, the Ambrosial Onasadya, the impressive Snake Boat Race and the exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of Onam's most notable festivals: Thanksgiving Day in Kerala.

Onam is the biggest festival in Malayalis and is celebrated in Kerala with a lot of noise. Observed during the month of Chingam, the first month of the solar calendar Malayalam, Kollavarsham is celebrated for 10 days. The festival begins on the day known as Atham and ends on the tenth day, known as Thiru Onam or Thiruvonam, meaning "the sacred Onam day". This year the festivities begin on the 25th of August and last until the 4th of September. However, some usual celebrations continue for two more days of snakes, Tiger Pulikkali games and other cultural events races.

Interestingly, Onam is celebrated to receive and honor a demon king. According to a popular legend, it is said that in Thiruvonam, the spirit of the demon (Asura), King Mahabali, Kerala and visit prepared to welcome the festival. Despite being a demon, Mahabali was known for being generous and friendly, and his reign is regarded as the golden age in Kerala, why his 'return' is so celebrated.

The legend behind the festival

According to Vaishnava mythology, it is said that Mahabali came to power to defeat the gods and take over the three worlds. The gods were not happy with their popularity, asking for help from Lord Vishnu in a battle against the demon king. Vishnu agreed to help, but did not want to engage in a fight since Mahabali was his ardent fanatic. Instead, kpsc thulasi helping other gods took the form of a poor Brahmin dwarf (Vamana avatar of his Dasavatara) and visited Mahabali, the king, asking him to grant three wishes. Arguing that one should not demand more than you need, the Brahmin asked for land ownership measurement "three steps" Mahabali agreed, giving little to know he was dealing with a god.
