Brewing Hardware Fittings
Posted: Jun 12, 2018
Home brewing has been practiced for hundreds of years. It is important to understand the equipment, including fittings, that are required to brew beer at home.
Home brewing refers to brewing beer on a small scale for non- commercial users at home. Beer has been brewed at home, many years before the commercial brewers came into the market.
For brewing beer at home, you need home brewing equipment and brewing hardware fittings to assemble it. Read on to know more.
Brew Kettles
Are used for boiling unfermented beer or wort before adding yeast to it. Some brewers might say that brew kettles are not necessary but from experience, we suggest that by using kettles, even with pre-hopped extracts, you can get a fresher taste of beer. Some of the brewing hardware fittings that go into the making of brew kettles include: stainless steel ball valves, reducers, hose tails, 90 degree bends, and nuts and bolts.
Stove or Burner
A stove pr burner is required to heat the wort to its boiling temperature. You can heat small batches of wort on a stove but for larger quantities, a propane burner is required.
Stirring Spoon
It is important to stir the wort when it is being boiled in order to prevent it from scorching the soluble. A steel or food grade spoon should be used for stirring purposes. Spoons made from wood and other porous materials should be avoided.
Fermenters
Fermenters should be made of tempered glass or food grade plastics. Some of the brewing hardware fittings required for Fermenters include screw cap with hole, brew hauler, brush, replacement lid, replacement O-ring, stand and others.
Bottling Bucket
This is a simple food grade bucket that has an attached spigot. It allows the priming sugar to be introduced into beer consistently, without disturbing the yeast layer.
Airlocks
There are a number of airlocks available in the market, like three piece and single piece. It prevents oxygen and foreign particles from entering into the fermenting beer while it expels carbon dioxide.
Syphon
As soon as the fermentation begins, alcohol forms in the liquid. The yeast in the beer will undergo oxidation and form undesirable tastes if it gets exposed to air. A siphon is therefor used for extracting the beer. It consists of a hose, racking cane, tube clip and a cane clip.
Bottles and Caps
Glass bottles are used for bottling the beer brewed. Swing top or pry top bottles can be used for this purpose. Screw top bottles are generally avoided. Caps can be bought from any brewing supply store.
The equipment used for home brewing beer can be made of food grade plastic, brass, aluminum or stainless steel. Plastic fittings are not as durable as the metal fittings. They are also less sanitary and will have scratches that can harbor bacteria and cause disease. Plastic fittings and plastic containers will cost less, but they are not hygienic and will ultimately cost you more.
We hope that you now have a greater insight about knowledge about homebrewing equipment and fittings. Start brewing your own beer today!
