Bappu, a Mambally family member during the 19th century had travelled to Burma (now Myanmar) to learn making biscuits. He returned back after couple of years and started in around 1880 his own "Mambily Royal Biscuit Factory’ based at Thalassery. It served 40+ varieties of rusks, biscuits, buns and breads. Its chief patrons were the British. During those days, bread dough was prepared with the crushing of wheat using crude stone grinders as well as local toddy to ferment the dough. This was until yeast was imported by the British.

According to a story in 1883 December, Mr. Brown, a British planter had owned a huge cinnamon plant. He requested Mambilly Baputti to come up with a cake for Christmas and shared a recipe with him. The cake baked was found to be more delicious than expected and the rest is history! The bakery during it’s hey days, exported its handmade delicious across the globe like Myanmar, Mesopotamia and Egypt. Since then, there mushroomed bakeries throughout Kerala.

The 129th anniversary of the 1st Thalassery bakery was celebrated on January 2012 by baking huge 350 ft long cake that weighed a whopping 1,200 kg and was displayed at municipal cricket grounds, the place where cricked in India was first played.

The world’s oldest baked cake goes back to the first flight of the Wright Brothers and Ford Model T. A British Pastry maker is said to hold the "Guinness World Record’ for maintaining the oldest still intact wedding cake that predates 1898! This cake was displayed proudly on the window of the family bakery at Basingstoke, U.K. for over 65 years. With its closure in 1964, this 4 tier cake was kept in an attic and in 1995, was handed over to Willis Museum, Basingstoke to be placed on display.
