The Modesty of Philippine Fashion

Philippine fashion evolves as time goes by. From a new style to another. What is trendy today might not be trendy in the next few years or perhaps the year after. But one thing is for sure, fashion is degrading when it comes to its modesty.

Today, most of the women, and perhaps young ones imitate celebrities on how they dressed. What appears on TV, magazines, advertisements, they considered it as the trendy fashion. Indeed, media has a great influence when it comes to fashion.

Most of the people think that because well-known people wore such revealing clothes, then it’s fine to follow that trend. Without even considering that how dress reflects our decency and dignity as an individual, especially as Filipina women whom was known being a conservative women throughout the world.

The fashion styles we can see across the country today is in contrast of how our grandma’s wore clothes back then. Imagining how conservative their looks are as they hide their legs behind a long dress compared to women today with revealing clothings.

The 21st century brought many changes to the Philippine fashion. From sleeveless blouses to mini shorts, there are many variations to how the styles today are used. From formally dressed clothings to "bagging jeans" and plain white-tees. Through time, how do Filipina women have transitioned to such clothing choices?

Let us define first modesty. Modesty is arbitrary across cultures. It defines the instinctive opinion of an individual regarding to the dictates of the society where she belongs to. But as women, especially Filipina women, we have to define the bounds of our own societal view of modesty.

As we trace the roots of our history, when we knew Catholicism from our European conquered us in the 16th century, our own civilizations adapted to the European view of modesty. And until now, the modesty of Filipina women was still influenced by the western cultures, and not just them, as well as the other cultures.
