Artificial intelligence (AI) is used to impart human intelligence and abilities to machines so that they can mimic human beings as closely as possible in every plausible aspect. AI is seeing increasing adoption by various sectors across diverse industries. It is at the center of many revolutionary, high-impact products. Another futuristic branch of engineering has come into being from the study and applications of AI – Engineering in Artificial Intelligence.

AI is increasingly used for solving many problems. Some primary goals are natural language processing (NLP), learning the behavior of natural systems, knowledge gathering and structuring, etc.

There are four types of Artificial Intelligence:

1. Reactive Machines

These are the most basic form of AI and are solely reactive, lacking the ability to form memories or use past experiences to make current decisions. This kind of intelligence involves the computer perceiving the world directly and acting on what it sees. There is no internal concept of the world.

2. Limited Memory

Machines operating with this kind of AI have the ability to access past information. Some self-driving cars already use this; they look at other cars’ speed and direction to make decisions. It is something that is done by identifying and observing objects over a period of time. This information about the past is transient in nature and cannot be saved in the car’s library of experience to learn from, so that they are able to handle new situations.

3. Theory Of Mind

This type of AI is more advanced; it not only forms representations about the world but also about other agents in the world. This is known as the ‘theory of mind’, which is the understanding that people, creatures, and objects in the world are capable of having thoughts and emotions that have an impact on their own behavior.

4. Self-Awareness

The final development of AI is to make systems that can form representations about themselves. For this, the concept of consciousness not only needs to be understood by AI researchers, but also needs to be incorporated into machines. This is an extension of the ‘theory of mind’ type of AI. Consciousness is also called self-awareness. Conscious beings are aware of themselves and know about their internal states, along with having the ability to predict feelings of others.

Undoubtedly, Artificial Intelligence is the next big thing. It is single-handedly changing the world around us. Earning a degree in Artificial Intelligence will help you get started with your career in this dynamic, path-breaking field.
