The Rise of Electronics Retail Chains

Until the mid-1990s, the market for electronic appliances in Mumbai was rather disorganised and limited to a few small-time retailers. These stores only stocked a handful of brands that fetched them high margins. Of course, consumers could not settle for these goods for long, and this led to the rise of large organized retailers like Kohinoor Electronics, Croma and Vijay Sales.

The Indian market had long been hungry for high-quality products and quick after-sales service, which organised chain stores were successfully able to deliver. Akai and Aiwa slowly made way for Samsung, LG, Sony, Electrolux and other premium tech brands from Korea and Japan. Indian brands like Videocon and Onida also began to gain popularity over Chinese products.

In the mid-90s, repairing a TV or air-conditioner would take weeks if not months. By the mid-2000s, it was possible to service all white goods within a few days.

Larger retailers also come with a host of other advantages: they buy in larger quantities, so they are able to sell the same products at lower prices. They also perform quality checks and train their employees better than a small store would – all of which are directly beneficial to the end consumer. Another benefit is that chain stores always maintain multiple warehouses – so if the gizmo you want isn’t available at your nearest outlet, they’ll quickly deliver it to you from another nearby store.

The Indian electronics market is scheduled to grow at 10% per annum* – mainly thanks to the new wave of big retailers like Reliance Digital, Kohinoor Electronics and E-zone. Our domestic market now has a larger variety of quality products backed by knowledgeable sales staff and efficient after-sales service. This has led to increased consumption and better customer satisfaction. The electronics sector is expected to contribute $228 billion** to India’s GDP by 2020!

The average consumer has also developed significantly in recent years. We’re part of a generation constantly surrounded by gadgets – we’re using smartphones, laptops and smartwatches on a daily basis - possibly all at the same time. Who’s to say what the future of electronics will hold? Let the consumer decide, and let the chain retailers bring it to them!
