Using Loading Arms for Better Speed and Efficiency in Oil & Chemical Loading Processes
Posted: Jun 22, 2018
Loading Arms can speed up the whole oil or chemical loading process. Not only that, but they can also make the whole process more efficient, safe, and reliable. Hence, increasing productivity and lower costs.
In today’s competitive business environment, everybody wants their work to be done faster and more efficiently. Thankfully, growing technology has enabled us to design, fabricate, and ship our products within weeks. There has been a constantly growing demand for various kinds of fuels and liquid substances that can be used as fuel. Earlier hoses were used to transfer such substances into the tankers, but they are quickly being replaced by steel loading arms. Hoses are, undoubtedly, cheap but are not as safe and durable as mechanical loading arms.
These loading arms are an alternative to the flexible hoses that were being used to transfer liquid or gaseous substances into vehicle. Loading Arms use an articulate pipe system that is able to transfer liquid or liquefied gases from one tanker to another. The pipe system used in the loading arms consists of swivel joints and rigid piping. The swivel joints used in them provides a certain degree of flexibility to the loading arm. This information can be confirmed by any loading arm supplier. We’ll now be looking at the two major types of loading arms.
1.Top and Bottom Loading Arms
These loading arms are used to transfer liquid or liquefied gases from or to a rail transported tank or a truck transported tank. The common features of both these loading arms are:
- Made up of 3 pipes; an inner arm, outer arm, and a drop pipe
- The size can range from 2" to 6"
- Swivel joints used to connect the 3 pipes
- Loading arms are usually mounted on a steel frame
- Counterweight or spring balance cylinders are used to provide balance to the loading arms
- The loading arms usually unfold to a set extension to enable them to load or unload a tanker
The price or cost of these loading arms can be confirmed by any loading arm supplier.
2.Marine Loading Arms
Marine loading arms are used to transfer liquid or liquefied gases from or to a boat, barge or a ship. These loading arms are made to follow the movement of the ship which might be caused due to the changing drafts, tide, wind, and various other factors. Marine Loading Arms are not just ergonomic but have also a longer service life. They further offer Emergency Release Action. This emergency release action prevents any spilling of the content which does not cause environmental pollution. The various features of these loading arms are mentioned below.
- Consists of rigid piping and swivel joints
- The inner and outer arms are movable
- The loading arm is connected to a fixed stand post or a riser
- A rotating counterweight is attached to the inner and outer arm which provides the required balance to the loading arm
- Larger marine loading arms are operated hydraulically
- The marine loading arms are self-supporting structures and do not require any wall
The information mentioned confirms loading arms provide better speed and efficiency to the whole loading process.
