Introduction:

One uses screws, nuts, and bolts almost on a daily basis. These are the standard and essential tools in utility in the industry. These tools have utility in every sector. However, do you know that you have to check the gauges of these threaded tools as well? In the production shops, they use the thread gauges to estimate the pitch of these simple threaded tools.

The need for the checking:

It looks like a straightforward question. What is there to check in a screw or a nut. However, an ill-fitting screw can bring down an aeroplane from the sky within no time at all. Do not underestimate its value in any way. The production teams have the critical job to check the gauges of each screw and bolt before certifying them fit for use in any industry. It brings to light, the concept of the thread gauges. These gauges are simple instruments used for checking and ascertaining the quality of the threaded tools.

We shall now see some simple types of thread gauges used in the industry. Every manufacturing and production industry uses them. Everyone would know the screws and the nuts. Therefore, we are not talking about the functioning of these primary instruments. We shall restrict our article to the operation of the thread gauges alone.

The Go and No-Go thread gauge:

Go, and No-Go gauges are of two types. You have the thread ring gauges and the thread plug gauges. The industrial workers use the thread ring gauges for the shafts and the thread plug gauges for checking the holes.

What do you check with the gauges?

The thread gauges help you to check the major diameter, the minor diameter, the pitch diameter, the threads per inch, and the flank diameter, and so on. The Go and the No Go gauges work in a typical fashion. The thread of the screw should answer the Go gauge without any force. At the same time, it should not pass through the No-Go gauge. It entails that the screw is fit for use. You use this simple technique for measuring the pitch of the normal screw.

The industry workers use the thread ring gauges for measuring the acceptance of the screw and the thread plug gauges for the nuts. It is because the screw is an externally threaded tool whereas the nut is an internally threaded one.

The advantages of using the thread gauges:

There are many advantages. We shall consider the most important ones alone.

The industry worker would be able to inspect the full thread profile and the pitch of the screw as well.

You do not require much of training to master this process. In case you can use the Go and the No Go thread gauges accurately, you can make a fair judgment whether the component is good or bad.

Final words:

The size of the gauges may be tiny, but the function they perform is phenomenal.
